  • Catch the Devil: A True Story of Murder, Deception, and Injustice on the Gulf Coast

Finished reading: Catch the Devil by Pamela Colloff 📚

The book is a gripping true-crime account of murder, corruption, and a justice system that doesn’t always deliver justice. Set along the Gulf Coast, the book digs beneath the surface of a disturbing murder case to reveal a complicated web of questionable evidence, conflicting stories, investigative failures, and people determined to uncover what really happened.

More than a simple retelling of a crime, the book examines how personal agendas, institutional failures, and deeply rooted assumptions can influence an investigation and its outcome. As new details emerge, the line between guilt and innocence becomes increasingly difficult to navigate.

What makes Catch the Devil particularly compelling is its focus on the human consequences of a flawed system. It’s a troubling reminder that solving a crime and achieving justice are not always the same thing…and that finding the truth can sometimes take years.

  • These 'Double Haters' Have Lost Faith in Both Parties--and Could Decide the Midterms

Rising tide of voter disenchantment stands to benefit Democrats in this year’s midterm contests

    • A Wall Street Journal poll found that 21% of the voter pool holds an unfavorable view of both the Democratic and Republican parties.
    • The share of “double haters” is now higher than in past elections.
    • Democrats currently lead among these doubly dissatisfied voters, but 40% are undecided or not fully committed to either party.

I never thought of myself as much of a “hater”, but maybe I’ll embrace it in this case.

Enjoyed celebrating Matthew’s birthday yesterday (a few days late) at Long Horn Steak House in Aiken.

Three people—an elderly man with a cane, a middle-aged woman, and a young man—are sitting together outside during the evening.

  • ReCraft: Creative Gold Mine

I happened upon a store the other week in Greenville while i was out doing some other shopping. The store is Recraft and is cooperative where all types of creatives - from teachers to artists - can share, repurpose and buy various materials and items. There were so many cool things - from barrels of bottle caps, lego pieces, etc. - that you can buy in batches, to old typewriters, sewing machines, puzzles, cancelled stamps. Then I happen to see a blog post about it on Facebook and thought i would share it as well.

  • Supreme Court Considerations

U.S. Supreme Court Begins Term With Historically Low Ratings

When I was growing up, we learned in school that the three branches of goverment were established to create a system of checks and balances. Maybe it has always been this way and I just didn’t notice it as a younger person, but it seems like that is an imbalance today and there is more of a political slant to the supreme court than what we learned in school. I’m not sure what the solution is but it seems like now is the time for revisiting all of the traditional elemnts of the court (term limits, justice selection, etc.)

A line graph with fluctuating values is superimposed over a government building resembling the Supreme Court, ending in a thumbs-down icon that cracks the ground.Americans' trust in the Judicial Branch of the Federal Government peaked around the late 1990s and early 2000s before experiencing a significant decline to 46% by 2026.
